Image Details for Birds - Australian Native 2

1. Wedge-tailed Eagle - immature - Aquila audax . Immature have brownish-black feathers, slightly lighter beak and may take up to 5 years to mature.

2. Wedge-tailed Eagle - Aquila audax . Huge, dark Eagle. Very large talons for hunting pray. Wingspan can be over 2 metres (6 feet). Tail diamond shape. May take up to 5 years to mature.

3. Collared Sparrowhawk - Accipiter cirrhocephalus . Medium sized hawk of stricking appearance, with long tail. Preys on smaller birds. Inhabits most forest types and woodland. Located Australia-wide except for small arid areas in Central Australia.

4. Peaceful Dove - Geopelia striata . Small graceful dove with blue patch of skin around eye. Inhabits farmland, open woodland, suburban parks and gardens. Located eastern and northern Australia and top of Western Australia.

5. Osprey - Pandion haliaetus . Meduim size raptor, with broad brownish cape of feathers around neck. Builds nests and returns each breeding season to re-stack nest and bring up the next lot of young. Some nests are over 3 feet high.

6. Osprey - Pandion haliaetus . This Osprey is feeding after a long hunt. Inhabits coastal areas and occassionally inland river systems.

7. Nankeen Kestrel - immature - Falco cenchroides . This Kestrel is learning from its mother, how to hunt and survive. Inhabits and hunts in open sparsely wooded grassland.

8. Nankeen Kestrel - immature - Falco cenchroides . This Kestrel left the nest a few week prior to this image being taken and other siblings and the mother are nearby (out of picture). Inhabits and hunts in open sparsely wooded grassland.

9. Black Kite - Milvus migrans . Large common bird of prey. Uniformly brown, long wings. Located Australia wide except for some south eastern coastal areas.

10. Osprey - Pandion haliaetus . Osprey feeding high up on a dead tree.

11. Whistling Kite - Haliastur sphenurus . A Whistling Kite glides past.

12. Whistling Kite - Haliastur sphenurus . A Whistling Kite searching for prey from tall tree stump.

13. Whistling Kite - Haliastur sphenurus . Whistling Kite in search of prey.

14. Satin Flycatcher - male - Myiagra cyanoleuca . Male Satin flycatcher searching for insects in the forest canopy.

15. Satin Flycatcher - female - Myiagra cyanoleuca . Small pretty bird which searches trees for insects and flutters its tail when landing on branches.

16. Osprey - Pandion haliaetus . Osprey searching for prey high in a dead tree.

17. Metallic Starling - Aplonis metallica . Fast flying flock and family orientated bird. Feeds on rainforest fruit and berries. Only located north eastern Queensland, Australia.

18. Metallic Starling - aplonis metallica . Restricted to tropical north eastern Queensland, Australia. Very fast flying, family and flock orientated. Feed on rainforest berries.
