Stock Photography By Doris Miocinovic

Haleakalā, "house of the sun" on East Maui is 3055 m (10,023 ft) dormant volcano. Endemic plant found there is a rare & protected Haleakalā silversword (Argyroxiphium sandwicense macrocephalum), also known as `āhinahina, growing above 1,500 m (4,900 ft) elevation in alpine deserts on low-nutrient volcanic cinder, & subject to wind & cold. The sword-like succulent leaves are covered with silver hairs strong enough to resist the weather & protect the plant from dehydration & the sun.
