Birds - Rainbow Bee-eater

Stock Photography By Paul Ross

This colorful little bird (Merops ornatus) is also known as the rainbow bird. In flight the wings are harlequin above and golden beneath with a multi colored iridescent head and body. They soar through the air rather quickly, catching flying insects and the occassional bee. They fly and perch in a family flock. I often hear their medium to high pitched purrr as they approach, well before I see them.
